🌱 Plant a Seed, Read!
June 27 – August 15, 2026
Join the Scotland Public Library for our 2026 Summer Reading Program!
This year's iREAD theme is Plant a Seed, Read!
Readers of all ages are invited to participate in one of our summer reading challenges:
🌱 Children's Summer Reading (Ages 0–12)
Families can pick up a reading tracker at the library or download one from our website. Color in one plant cat for each day you read, or are read to, for 20 minutes or more.
Participants who complete the challenge will be entered into a drawing to win a cuddly plant plush prize.
📚 Teen & Adult Book Bingo
Teens and adults can complete our Summer Reading Bingo challenge by reading books that fit a variety of categories and activities.
Complete one bingo (five squares in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) to earn an entry into our grand prize drawing.
Adults ages 21 and older will be entered into a drawing to win a wine set from a local Scotland winery. An alternate prize option will be available.
🎉 Summer Reading Kickoff
Celebrate the start of Summer Reading on Saturday, June 27!
Activities include:
- Chalk drawing outside (weather permitting)
- Bookmark craft
- Snacks
- The first of our summer scavenger hunts
- Summertime Stories at 10:00 a.m.

Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.

🦉 End-of-Summer Celebration
Our summer celebration concludes with a special visit from the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center on Saturday, August 15.

🦖 Creature Containment: Dinosaur Passport
June 15 – August 21, 2026
Dinosaurs, giant plants, carnivorous squirrels, and other prehistoric creatures have escaped containment and are hiding in libraries, museums, and parks across Connecticut!
Pick up a Creature Containment booklet at the Scotland Public Library and begin your prehistoric adventure. Visit participating locations to collect special stamps in your booklet as you help return the creatures to safety.
How to Participate
1. Pick up a Creature Containment booklet at the Scotland Public Library.
2. Visit participating libraries, museums, and parks to collect stamps.
3. Collect at least 5 stamps.
4. Return your completed booklet to the Scotland Public Library by Friday, August 21, 2026.
5. Complete the Grand Prize Entry Form by August 21:

* Grand Prize: Two admission passes to Mystic Aquarium.
* Local Prizes: Dinosaur plushies for selected winners.

Scotland Public Library Welcomes New Library Director Andrew “Drew” Tingley
Scotland Public Library is pleased to welcome Andrew “Drew” Tingley as our new Library Director. Drew began his role on April 14, 2026, and brings experience in public library services, digital literacy, community engagement, and program development.
Drew is excited to support the library’s continued growth and to work alongside staff, patrons, community partners, and the Town of Scotland to strengthen the services and programs offered at Scotland Public Library.
With a background in technology support, library services, community programming, and organizational leadership, Drew is looking forward to helping the library remain a welcoming place for learning, connection, creativity, and access to resources for all ages.

Looking ahead, the 2027 Nutmeg Book Award nominees have just been released, marking the start of a new reading year. These titles are now available for readers to begin exploring, and we’re excited to start sharing them with our community.
What is the Nutmeg Book Award?
The Nutmeg Book Award is a Connecticut-based readers’ choice award that encourages children and teens to read quality literature and vote for their favorite titles.

News from Scotland's Poet Laureate, Susan Powers
On March 28, 2026, we were honored to have Susan share her lovely words of praise for Library Director, Mary Geragotelis on her retirement. In addition, she read 3 haiku written especially for the occasion.
Susan helped the library celebrate 20 years in our glorious building with a special poetry reading on Saturday, June 7, 2025 as part of our "birthday" celebration.
Over the summer in 2025, Susan worked with a young library patron to get her work published in the Orenaug Mountain Poetry Journal.

Susan has started an Open Mic night at the Community Center in Willimantic, CT. Additionally, she has had her work published in The Lost Love Anthology and has a collection of her poems in her latest book, Gather Your Chi. A copy of the book is at the library and available to check out.
Susan wrote and read her poem about addiction at a forum in August 2025 at the CT Legislative offices.
In 2026, Susan will be returning in the fall to the residency program at the Writers Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. She will be working with high school students from the area to create poetry based on the artwork at a local museum.
